What is Understanding Finance for Business?
This programme gives hands on support to small-medium sized companies that are wanting to raise finance to grow their business. If you were to apply for this programme you would receive support in the form of workshops, seminars and one-to-one meetings, and you would leave the programme knowing how to present attractive propositions for banks, business angels, and venture capital investors.


There are two streams of intensive support available, in this feature we will talk about the Gateway to finance programme. This programme provides guidance to businesses so that they can succeed when approaching lenders to secure finance.


Who runs this programme?
A team of private sector experts that are funded by the London Development Agency and European Regional Development Fund have come together to create the Understanding Finance for Business programme.


Am I eligible to apply for this programme?

  • You must have fewer than 250 employees and less than £40million in annual sales
  • You must be located within the London Borough
  • You can be in any sector of the economy i.e. clean tech, consumer goods, Leisure, Retail etc.
  • You must be looking to raise more than £30,000 in debt finance 
  • You must need independent and in depth advice on raising finance

What will I receive from this programme?

  • 2 hour one to one session with a business advisor
  • Minimum of 12 hours one to one business support
  • Support in developing a finance ready business plan for the banks
  • Help in indentifying different sources of finance for your business
  • Support in understanding the key issues when applying for debt finance
  • If applicable, introductions to banks and other lenders
How much does this programme cost? 

This programme will cost you a bit of money, so you could call it an investment in itself if you like. The first 2 hour one-to-one session is free, and then a heavily subsidised contribution of £200 is required once you move forward.
